On December 26, 2004, a tsunami struck the southern coast of Thailand, leaving over 280,000 dead, over 500,000 injured, and millions homeless. In response, the Thai government set up a competition to design a place to not only remember the dead, but encourage those left behind. In addition to the memorial, the facility was to contain of- fices, a large museum, restaurant, and a small retail center.
